Providing Clean Water for a Lifetime
Water well flow rates depend on many factors that can have a multitude of solutions. A low well flow that delivers water in the 2.5 GPM range or below, isn’t able to keep up with water usage in a building with typical occupancy. If someone were to flush a toilet at the same time that water is running on the same system without enough flow, the water could cut off to the house until enough water builds up to supply the demand again.
The majority of water wells have a pressure tank to supply the water usage demand, but if this doesn’t produce enough pressure then adding an above-ground water tank can resolve the issue. Water tanks should reflect the water usage of a property, with enough capacity in reserve in case of above-average water use. If a tank without enough capacity is used, the tank will be used up before it’s able to recover from drawing from the water well that doesn’t have a lot of pressure.
The best-case scenario would be to have a large capacity above the groundwater storage tank that can supply enough drinking and domestic water, even in emergencies. The low flow rate well and pump will then rely on recovering the water supply overnight, or when water use goes down. Providing water capacity that is ready to go makes the water well source reliable and measurable.
The ‘Typical Home Water Usage Rates: Average Required Flow Rates’ Chart reflects the pressure and water capacity required on average for a typical household.
Having water storage to provide for your water usage has more advantages than consistent water supply. Water storage tanks for water well systems:
Increase the life of your water well pump because it cycles less
Increases efficiency of your water pressure when water is stored above ground
Added fire protection for your home by making water readily available
Water is available during power outages
Water tanks allow sediment to settle at the bottom so that water can be pumped from the top for cleaner water.
Cleaner water also means increasing the life of your water filters
