Water Tank Foundations
Pioneer Water Tanks Foundations
The foundation for Pioneer Water Tanks depends on the location and application of the water storage project. Pioneer Water Tanks may have the option to sit on a clean sand pad base or may be required to be anchored to a concrete ring beam depending on the local authority.
Our experienced installation network is trained in safe methods of work and disciplined to operate within the strictest client site requirements. Pioneer Water Tanks America may offer professional recommendations for the pre-installation foundation site preparation if they are available in your area.
Site preparation is required to be completed before a Pioneer Water Tanks installation crew arrives on site. Pioneer Water Tanks required guidelines need to be met to prevent any additional cost of remedial works for site preparation that isn’t up to par.
This short video shows a concrete ring beam being installed for a 51,785-Gallon Pioneer Water Tank in Nothern California.
The ring beam drawings specify the size, number and spacing of the reinforcing bars and ligatures to be used as well as the MPA rating for the concrete.
Ring beams should be as level as possible and have no more than +/- 1/16” over any 5’0” (+/- 2mm over any 2m) of the circumference at the tank wall position and +/- 1/8” (+/- 4mm) over the entire ring beam.
A survey chart will need to be completed and returned to your local installer for approval before the construction is started.
The local Pioneer Water Tanks installer needs to ensure that foundation conditions are adequate.
All water storage systems are subject to the local authority requirements so Pioneer Water Tanks also recommends local installers adhere to that authority for the tank location.

Cement Ring Beam Site Preparation
Each model of Pioneer Water Tank has an exact cement ring beam dimensions and details that are outlined in our engineering packages.
At the time of your order, a specific ring beam drawing will be issued for the project requirements. It’s recommended that there is strict adherence to these specifications for the best performance of the tank.
Requirements Include:
- Foundations conditions are adequate
- Safe bearing capacity should equal or exceed 150kPa
- The founding materials must be stable (i.e. landfill or active clay may be unsuitable)
- Most sands and gravels that have been compacted to a reasonable level will be adequate, provided there’s soil beneath.
- Before you start preparing your site for installation of your tank, Pioneer Water Tanks America also recommends you contact your local authority to see what regulations or restrictions are in place.
Commercial Water Tanks
Commercial Pioneer Water Tanks are engineered for durability with increased roof trussing and tank wall reinforcement. Commercial water storage systems utilize the heavy-duty roof that is structurally designed to enable mounting of features such as vents, hatches, and or platforms. We offer engineered designs of Pioneer Water Tanks for seismic areas with anchoring options to the foundation.
The commercial Pioneer Water Tank system series can be configured to the application with accessory options. Our engineering packages work with local engineering consultants to provide for the permitting.
Customize your water tank
Knowing your rainwater tank is for your home, and needs to be in keeping with your personal style, Pioneer Water Tanks has a range of colors and additional features to choose from.
How to prepare your property for water tank installation
Before most water tanks can be installed, a cement ring beam or a stable sand pad foundation must be prepared.
There are some important things to consider when selecting your tank site and preparing the pad.
- The sand pad must be level, stable and free of debris before construction.
- The sand pad must be at least 7’ larger than the diameter of your tank.
- For sloping tank sites, ensure adequate drainage to divert runoff away from the tank wall.
- Aggregate must be placed around the circumference of your tank to stop erosion and comply with warranty conditions*.
- A retaining wall may be required to maintain pad integrity*.
- Your tank should not be left empty for an extended time. A minimum load of water (10% of tank capacity) should be placed in your tank after construction.
* Check with your local distributor to see if they can provide this additional service. If not, you will need to make sure this is appropriately applied after water tank installation yourself.
Before you start preparing your site for installation of your water tank, Pioneer Water Tanks also recommends you contact your local authority to see if there are any regulations or restrictions in place.
Although a properly prepared sand pad will minimise the risk of contaminants or debris compromising your water supply, Pioneer Water Tanks also includes a geotextile membrane for added liner protection.
Following the above process will help to ensure hat your tank pad is prepared correctly.
Before you start preparing your site for installation of your water tank, Pioneer Water Tanks also recommends you contact your local shire to see if there are any regulations or restrictions in place.
